The core of UWAEG is a group of faculty members in the Biology Department of the University of Waterloo, all with interests in aquatic ecology. Our interests and expertise are concentrated in aquatic biology of the lower and middle food web, biogeochemical ecology, paleolimnology and physiological ecology. However, UWAEG welcomes faculty and students from other academic departments who have a strong interest in the aquatic environment. The group serves as a vehicle for collaborative research, development of funding initiatives and organization of discussion, workshops and seminars. Issues under investigation by UWAEG members include the impacts of climate change and land use on freshwater biota and ecosystems, the role of exotic and invasive species in aquatic food webs, toxic and nusiance algae, and the ecological effects of nutrients and contaminants in lakes.
